18th Century Cast Iron Fireback
2002-19358C
(Click the Item No. for an inquiry)

Location : Dallas

Decorative cast iron firebacks were used to protect masonry from the intense heat of the fireplace, used on a daily basis in the northern regions of Europe, which would slowly degrade the bricks or masonry in the back leading to costly repairs. Simply "throwing" in a new iron fireback was much easier, quicker, and less expensive! The decorative aspect came in handy on warmer days when there were no logs or fire. Prized by designers nowadays as decorative accents in the kitchen, especially behind the cooktop.
Circa 1770s.
Measures 35 x 19
