Hand-crafted from dense planks of solid French white oak over two centuries ago, this exciting find is one of the earlier examples of the combination of a secretary desk with a bookcase as interpreted by talented rural artisans. Using only hand tools, they sculpted a brilliantly designed crown centered with the family crest of the person who commissioned the work. Hand-carved mortise & tenon joints secured with square pegs have kept the joints tight all these decades. Superlative molded detail and the symbolic fleur de lys below indicate a sense of loyalty to the French monarchy. Note the hand-hewn planks that comprise the back side.
