The Directoire was an interesting style development that occurred between the reign of Louis XVI and the ascendance of Napoleon Bonaparte. Combining ancient Greek and Egyptian motifs which held over into the emerging Empire style, the Directoire is more recognized as a less flamboyant and perhaps more delicate look. During a revival of this style in the 19th century is when these chairs were produced, and with subtle carved accents and a multi-hued painted finish the artisans have created a light and airy look that was highly desirable then and even into today.
