This magnificent pair of monumental Italian bookcases were custom made for an affluent Milanese client during the middle of the 19th century. Massive, boldly carved crowns rest atop four tiers of shelves which are supported by finely turned columns all around. The base cabinets not only boast fine relief carvings of stylized heraldic crests, gryffins, dolphins and Renaissance-inspired motifs, the pilasters and drawer tier feature sculpted shells and bounty-of-the-earth sculptures. In complementary contrast the sides are carved intaglio style with crest, gryffins and foliates. Exquisite molded detail encompassing the entire affair completes the look.
One measures 107H x 68W x 28D; the other is 67W. The maximum width at the top of the crown is 71.5W for one and 70W for the other. The maximum depth at the top is 29.5D.
