During the 19th century, medications did not roll out of factories with computer-controled robotic precision; they were prepared from raw ingredients at local pharmacies by skilled pharmacologists right before the eyes of the patient. Cast bronze examples like this were preferred because although they tended to be more expensive, the metal was hard and almost impervious to most of the materials crushed and blended in its confines.
