Most unusual for a butter churn, this example was turned from a single block of wood! Throughout the later centuries, the barrel cooper usually assembled such devices, but this particular example was apparently turned on a water-wheel driven lathe since there were no coopers employed in the area. Even the cap, designed to keep the butter and cream from splattering, was turned from a single block.
