In a day when the lines between the ruling class and the church were much more blurred than today, styles developed which reflected both the symbols of power and the symbols of various religions melded into one. The Byzantine movement remains one of the most celebrated, combining these elements with a flair that remains unmatched. This example, cast and chased from solid bronze in the form of altar candlesticks, exhibits both the intricate embellishments and a bold architecture that make them quite unusual. Stylized signs of the cross and royal crests probably seen during the Crusades work with the additional elements to make this pair extraordinary conversation pieces.
