Carefully carved from a specially selected piece of blemish-free hardwood, this statue depicts a lancer perhaps pondering the battle about to begin. Holding a shield with a superbly carved eagle in relief in one hand, and a decorated tricorner lance in the other, his raiment suggests that he was part of a royal guard regiment. Lancers were usually more front-line warriors than the swordsmen, able to reach out at a greater distance during close quarters combat, while using the shield to deflect arrows and thrown weapons. Only the most loyal and trusted souls were selected to protect the king and his court, so he actually held a place of honor in the realm.
