The timeless classicism of ancient Rome was revived during the reign of Louis XVI and refined, artistically expressed, and perfected by the French. This chair is a case in point: Perfectly tailored architecture with subtly arched seatbacks ~ which also happen to be comfortably curved years before the word "ergonomics" was coined ~ provide wonderful visual appeal. Fine carved detail abounds, made more evident by the painted finish which has achieved a lovely patina over the decades. Tapered & fluted column legs provide support, while a variety of motifs including spiral ribbon, laurel garlands, rosettes and more are artfully expressed in the solid wood frame. Nothing, however, compares to the superlative needlepoint & petit point upholstery, painstakingly woven for hour after hour, day after day, until the stunning floral pattern emerged!
Circa 1890s.
