Hand-thrown pots made by rural potters were the staple of container needs for much of Europe's past, and these examples remain today of a bygone era. After being thrown on the wheel, glaze was applied on the inside and up over the rim, but not all the way down. This allowed natural transpiration to keep the contents cooler than the ambient temperature, especially in basements and makeshift storage caves.
Circa 1880s.
