Back before the days of central air & heat, some folks considered themselves lucky to have coal stoves, as coal was a more compact and easily managed source of heat compared to wood, even if it was a little dirtier to handle. Coal stored in the basement was scooped up in buckets like this, and left near the coal stove or fireplace, so that fresh coal could be easily added, especially with the aid of the ingenious lower handle.
