This stunning antique buffet boasts storage below and display above! Crafted entirely by the hands of master artisans from Normandie during the later years of the 18th century, it boasts an amazing level of sculpted relief work. Note the fully laden grapevines woven around the framework of the glazing and the olive branches springing up from acanthus frond moldings. Trademarks of the region's menuisiers, the eliptical medallions at the center of the upper doors, are embellished with baskets of fruit symbolizing a bountiful life, surrounded by beaded molding, enhanced yet again by egg & dart. One of the verifications of the age of this work are the highly embellished steel ferrures, depicting hearts and crosses, which guard the keyholes above and below. Full length barrel hinges, usually made by local gunsmiths (hence the name) combine to add just the right visual accent, and allow the doors to open wide for excellent access. Designed to be the visual centerpiece of the room, proud owners would display their finest faience for all to appreciate. For those who wish to create a Country French look in the office, this also makes an excellent choice as a bookcase!
Circa 1780s.
