Hand-carved from solid French walnut, this trumeau represents a study in the Regence style, a superb blend of the baroque and rococo that began just before the reign of Louis XV. Classic shell and foliate motifs are depicted, providing an artful frame for the lovely and colorful floral painting on canvas above, plus the mirror below. Such Country French trumeaux typically were built into the wall paneling of the chateau but have come to be used just as hanging mirrors or paintings. One gets the best of both worlds ~ a mirror to reflect light into the room, and a lovely painting hand-painted on canvas to decorate the wall!
