One of the most admired and prolific Belgian painters of the late 19th and early 20th century, Paul Schouten (1860-1922) has given us a glimpse into every corner of rural life from that period, as well as providing a splendid collection of pastorals that hang on walls all over the world. This example is intriguing, as it seems to depict a wary shepherd checking out the barn before letting his prized flock in for the night. The detail is superb, including the tired dog who has earned his keep for the day, and the chickens scampering for cover, now resigned to find another place to roost for the night. Mounted in its original gilded frame excellent condition.
