Location : Baton Rouge

In this work, situated in its original frame, the artist has successfully depicted a quaint little European town just after a rainshower, with the clouds just beginning to clear. Two villagers have already ventured forth, probably headed to school or the market. Interestingly, the painter was obviously of humble origins, as he was obliged to stitch together two canvas pieces to create a large enough piece for this work. The earthiness of the palette and the intriguing use of colors truly execute an amazing mood in this work. The mother and child walking down the cobblestone street adds a special human element. This work speaks to different people in a different way, especially when you note the clearing in the clouds ahead giving the promise of fair skies to come.
An intriguing combination of colors and perspective!
Circa 1900-1910.
Canvas measures 34.5 x 38.5; overall 39.5 x 43.5.
