During the 19th century when "political correctness" had yet to be concieved, it was fashionable to create statuary that was placed at the entryway to greet guests, in both homes and places of business such as restaurants and hotels. The blackamoor was typically depicted with a head covering, usually a turban, and covered in rich jewels and gold leaf. It was usually male. They are typically enamelled, carved from ebony or painted black to contrast with the bright colors of the embellishments. Depictions may only represent the head, or head and shoulders, facing the viewer in a symmetrical pose.
It is therefore exceedingly unusual to find this work of art, being lavishly decorated in raiment and pedestal, with the hand-painted adornment in such exceptional condition. In addition, the depiction of a female form is also more rare. Finally, the artistry by which this was made, remembering that it was carved from wood then hand-enamelled, makes this specimen truly museum-quality!
Circa 1870s.
Measures 47 x 13.5 in diameter.
