The deep patina of the hand-planed panels of choice French walnut radiates veneration in this exceptional Louis XIII antique armoire a deux corps . Geometric in its forms and subtle in its embellishments, the style originated in 16th century France and flourished until the late 17 th century. Exemplifying the latter, this exceptional piece illustrates a provincial interpretation of the court influence. Its purity and symmetry emphasizes the sheer beauty of the wood, while the finely executed carved ornamentation imparts gallant visual interest. A magnificently detailed perched eagle with swags creates sculpture on the frieze, punctuated by splendid putti masks of the corners. Four step-molded, paneled cabinets of the case are separated by the central drawer tier, and framed by hand-carved en chapelet, or “rosary” stiles. Providing both structural and visual balance, the step-molded plinth and classic bun feet ground the piece. Survived with its original hand-forged interior iron hinges and massive locking mechanisms, escutcheons and keys, it is poised to warm your home with historic allure.
