The elegant simplicity of the Directoire style has influenced designers ever since the turn of the 19th century. Spawned during the turbulent years surrounding the ascendency and fall of Napoleon Bonaparte, the style drew its embellishment from the Empire format, but developed its own look with more of an emphasis on austerity and tailored elegance. This example, survived with its original two mirrors placed together, since the technology at the time would not allow the production of mirrors any larger, is in impeccable condition except that the backing has been replaced to protect the silvering.
