Antique Gothic Hall Bench
2009-03385
(Click the Item No. for an inquiry)

Location : Dallas

Crafted entirely from fine French walnut, this hall bench features a unique architecture that includes combining the moorish arches with column cornerposts that are elaborately carved in stark contrast to the simple lines of the seatback and trunk below. Speaking of trunk, this antique French trunk has a lot of storage under the seat, accessed with the aid of forged iron hinges.
The earliest identifiable Gothic style was developed in France in 12th century, but the distinctive artifacts of that period exist only in museums and rare private collections. The style is characterized by pointed, angular arches, beveled moldings, and austere vaulted lines. In the field of architecture the flying buttress defines the Gothic style that flourished during the height of the medieval era. Most of the examples of antique Gothic furniture that we enjoy today were crafted during the 18th and 19th century, representative of a romanticized Gothic revival style that occurred centuries after its origination.
Circa 1870s.
Measures 48.5 x 52.5 x 23.5.
