During the second half of the 19th century Western Europeans were enamored with all things Oriental, and plates from Japan's storied Imari area were especially in vogue. This plate illustrates why ~ the exquisitely detailed hand-painted decoration still retains its vivid coloration due to their proprietary glazing process. Unfortunately, plates in this condition are getting harder and harder to find each year!
