Location : Dallas

A product of the work of four master artisans, bombe commodes such as this example have been decorating homes since the heady days of the Louis XV period. First, the master cabinetmaker created the intricate form of the casework, with complex three dimensionality yet precise symmetry. Next, the menuisier would adorn the casework with carefully oriented and selected exotic woods, elevated to an art form with inlaid floral patterns and borders using exotic mahogany, rosewood, and indigenous walnut. Then, the metal expert would cast bronze in the rococo manner to perfectly fit the form and contour of the piece, in this case on the apron, as drawer pulls and as corner guards on the shoulders. Finally, the stone mason carved and beveled a precisely contoured piece of sienna marble to complete the work.
Circa 1880s.
