In conjunction with the human form, animals have been the subjects for some of the earliest works of art, with prehistoric cave paintings representing them as sacred beings. Remaining a vital component in art throughout history, the depiction of animals have served an imminent role in the evolution of Avant-garde art, which sought subjects far removed from the traditional depictions of Academic Classicism.
A fine illustration of such a genre, this beautifully rendered oil on canvas depicts a trio of horses weary after a long day on the steppes, relaxing outside the nomad tents over a bale of well-deserved hay. Cool colors represented in the vast expanse of land filling the background create a beautiful contrast with the warm hues of the horses' coats, while the setting sun in the horizon creates a brilliant luminosity. Fine details and expert gradation of tone are a testament to the aptitude of the artist responsible.
Attributed to douard-Joris Moerenhout, (1801-1893) a Belgian painter active in the second half of the nineteenth century renowned for his wildlife genre and landscape paintings.
Circa 1850s.
