In this oil on canvas, St. Michael has been depicted as dressed like a Greek warrior, with wings outspread over his vanquished foe, Satan, seen at the bottom entering the gates of hell. The classic triumph of good over evil has been an inspiration for humanity for millenia, and this work with its unusually vivid use of color offset by the simple black-toned frame is an excellent expression of classicism. As was the norm, the artist humbly donated such works to the church without attribution as a sign of his or her contrite devotion.
