Another master work by prolific artist Henry Schouten (1857-1927) , this barnyard scene captures a hard-working farmer taking a break from the field for a bit of refreshment provided by his wife. Schoutten's mastery of animal anatomy was equaled only by his exceptional ability to render backgrounds and foregrounds with deft brush strokes and particularly talented use of color. Henry Schouten (also referred to as Henri Schouten) (Indonesia, ca 1857 - Brussels , 1927) was a Belgian painter who is best known as animal and landscape painter. He also used the pseudonym Joseph Klaas. He received his education at the Academy of Brussels (1876-1881). He underwent a strong influence of the animal painter Alfred Verwee . He proposed in 1882 exhibited in Brussels with the Union des Arts .
