Wintry Landscape with Windmill
In the mid 19th century, the Barbizon school of landscape artists emerged as a reaction against the superficial representations of the romantic and academic styles. The movement focused on realistic depictions of everyday people engaged in commonplace activities, free of idealized or romanticized conceptions.
Among the most sophisticated works in our inventory, this exquisite oil on canvas depicts a picturesque rural town during winter, centered around a prominent windmill and waterway. Full of activity, the vibrant composition is replete with villagers engaged in a variety of agricultural labors, minute details of naturalistic elements, and a dexterously executed sky. In addition, proper handling of perspectival space, accurately cast shadows, and three dimensional presence create an exceptionally refined work.
Survived with its original, beautifully detailed gesso and wood frame.
Measures 29.5 x 33.5 with frame.
