Beautifully preserved oil lantern was considered a vast improvement over candles, without the messy wax drippings and smoke that the latter provided. At some point an enterprising person decided to color the oil for a more individualistic effect, and the glass version of the oil lantern became more popular for that reason, as well as they were cheaper to produce than the brass ones. The leaded cut crystal examples, such as this fine piece, were considered the ultimate lighting source. Unfortunately, being more fragile, not as many remain~
