Dormant Vie Trumeau
Crafted on a grand scale for a prominent home along the Franco/Belgian border, this exquisite trumeau is a wonderful expression of the Louis XIV style. Designed to conceal the masonry chimney coming up from the fireplace mantel, the trumeau was masterfully hand carved from select European white oak. It features fine molded detail and a dexterously executed two-tiered shell cartouche, breaking the chapeau de gendarme arch of the remarkable oil on canvas below.
Evidenced by its ability to stand alone as its own, fine work of art, the exceptional oil painting is singular in its elevated sophistication and inclusion of a signature. Trumeaux were rarely signed, as they were commonly executed by traveling, decorative artists. This fine example is attributed to Marcel Caron (1890-1961), a well-known Belgian painter active in the early 20th century. Although the painting itself is dated 1919, the trumeau and mantel date to the late 19th century.
Circa 1919.
Measures 95.5 x 61.5 x 15.5.
