This handsome mirror was produced during the Second Empire but its style is purely First Empire! Hand-carved wood comprises the framework with no plaster ~ then a gilt finish was applied to all but the background on the trumeau panel above, lavished with definitive Empire motifs drawn from ancient Egyptian and Greek architecture with which Napoleon and Josephine were enamored. Superb acanthus leaf bordering combines with rope motif bordering punctuated with acanthus rosettes to form the perfect framework.The mirror glass and the back are original.
