Considered an innovation when they first appeared, spring scales gradually replaced balance scales, being easier and cheaper to produce, and resulting in a product that was smaller and lighter in the bargain. This example features an intricately printed dial face for extra precision, and an elaborately cast casework, obviously meant to inspire confidence in the customers of the savvy store owner who possessed such an essential treasure!
