Beautifully preserved oil lantern was considered a vast improvement over candles, without the messy wax drippings and smoke that the latter provided. At some point an enterprising person decided to color the glass for a more individualistic effect, and the glass versions were often pressed into patterns such as this example for fine visual appeal. Unfortunately, being more fragile, not as many remain~
