Antique French bronze Chinoiserie jardiniere was cast in bronze and encrusted around a bronze vessel with high copper content for an artistic contrast and expression. Chinoiserie is a recurring theme in European artistic styles since the seventeenth century, which reflect Chinese artistic influences. It is characterized by the use of fanciful imagery of an imaginary China, by asymmetry in format and eccentric contrasts of scale, and by the attempts to emulate Chinese jardinieres such as this example and the use of other materials and decoration in interior design over past three centuries. Crafted in France with amazing skill and precision during the reign of Napoleon III, this jardiner is a perfect example of the revival of Chinoiserie Style during the second part of 19th century.
