Long before the days of hot and cold running water, fontaines were placed just outside the back doors so that family members and field hands could wash their hands before coming inside for lunch or dinner. This vessel, hand-made from copper with cast brass accents, features a turning valve which allowed the water to gently flow over the hands into the basin below. The reservoir above was easily filled by removing the simple cap. Mounted on a board, which was permanently mounted to the wall, it could be removed for occasional cleaning.
