Although smaller in size than the large barrels used for fermenting, barrels this size were still made with the same care by the winery's cooper, with staves of oak banded together with red hot iron that when cooled contracted around the staves to make the barrel water (wine) tight. The size made them much more portable and amenable to commerce.
Circa 1850s.
Measures 24.5 x 17.5 in diameter.
