Antique of the Week ~ the King Size Bed

he eloquent style of Louis XV is behind the elegance of this incredible French antique bed.  Louis XV bedroom furniture style was born in an era of antiquity, when romance rained supreme and the courts of France were ruled by style maven Madame de Pompadour.

Antique King Size Louis XV Walnut Bed

Crafted from select walnut, this elegant bed has been painstakingly converted to accept a King size mattress by our expert staff! The undulating sensuous form of the rococo, so admired by Louis XV, has been ably captured by the artisans who sculpted the wood into the naturalistic forms, then added hand-carved relief carvings from the crown to the base. Even the rail is carved with stylized shell motif. Note how the rails blend with the head and footboards, a true sign of superior craftsmanship! Circa 1880s.

The Louis XV style is characterized by fluid lines and rococo curves.  It encompasses an asymmetrical treatment of rocaille designs featuring shells and vegetation.  This graceful style is one of the most closely identified to what many consider definitive French antique furniture.  It has inspired the creation of new forms of beds, chairs, tables, armoires, commodes and more ~ bringing an element of romance and femininity to both the era itself and the collective world of design.

The tastes of Louis XV, dictated by a love of personal comfort combined with intimate surroundings, lend it beautifully to the design of a romantic bedroom chamber.  Of course the bed is always the centerpiece of this design.
