Caravaggio and Antique Baroque Art

Antique Letter Engravingast weekend John and I finally took the day off and went to Fort Worth’s Kimbell Art Museum for an exciting exhibit of “Caravaggio and his followers in Rome”.  We were eagerly looking forward to this exhilarating event.  The exposition not only has ten incredible antique works of art by the Baroque master, but it also has a compelling and powerful collection of 40 paintings of his followers.  Only as we compare them side to side can we can see the brilliance of his talent.  Of course many of his followers went on to develop their own style such as Rubens and La Tour.

Antique Painting by Caravaggio: Saint John The Baptist in the Wilderness

I first saw this magnificent painting in Kansas City at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art while I lived there as a young girl. I found it just as impressive and inspiring as the first time I saw it years ago.

Caravaggio (1571-1610) is an artist John and I have admired for a long time, with his art being both amusing and inspirational.  It never fails to touch your emotions.  The provocative and intense realism of his art, combined with his skillful use of light and shadow, inspired a movement for which Caravaggio was famous.  During the late 16th century European Art was emerging from the Mannerism period which followed the High Renaissance era championed by Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael.  Mannerism resulted in a very stylized type of art with a lack of clear perspective or realism.

This magnificent masterpiece is a part of the collection of the Kimbell Museum in Fort Worth, Texas. The amazing detail of the garments and the objects in this painting showcases Caravaggio's genius.

In contrast, Caravaggio’s free and naturalistic style made an overwhelming impact on art in Rome that rippled throughout Europe.  Although his life was short and often troubled (which experts now agree was due to lead poisoning from the paint used at the time), he left an amazing mark on the European art world.  Through his brilliant talent and genius he is considered by many to be the father of modern art.

Antique Painting St. Francis in Ecstasy by Caravaggio

You can almost feel the loving embrace of the angel comforting St. Francis in this painting by Caravaggio entitled "Saint Francis of Assisi in Ecstasy".

During our travels abroad and visits to stateside museums we have had the privilege of viewing some of Caravaggio’s paintings, but to see this tantalizing collection of 50 masterpieces one would have to travel the world over.  We are grateful to all the efforts required to bring such an exhilarating exhibit to the Kimbell Museum.  So, if you get the chance to be in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, make sure to see this exhibit.  It closes January 8, 2012.

Antique Accessories for the Wine Connoisseur

A-1 copyAutumn is a very important season in Europe.  It is time for the grape harvest across the continent, especially in France and Italy.  Vineyards from Burgundy to Tuscany are busy gathering and creating the “Antique Wine Accesories at Inessa Stewart's Antiques & Interiorsmagic nectar of the gods”.  John and I have visited many wineries over the years and it always amazes me how much knowledge, talent and care goes into the production of a single bottle of wine ~ one must have perfect weather, soil conditions, solar orientation, soil moisture. The list is amazing!Just recently we were fortunate to spend time in several remarkable vineyards in Napa Valley, California.  Now is the time of the year to stock up your wine room or wine cellar. Many wineries traditionally release new vintages at this time of the year, so it is great~ just before fall entertainment season~ to stock up on some wine and plan a wine tasting party.  Now is a perfect time to be wine lover, because so many wineries gladly share their wine expertise freely, resulting in educated wine consumers.  Even with a little knowledge you can sound like an expert.

Of course, after acquiring all of this great wine it can be fun to share with friends, which makes it a excellent time to have a wine tasting party.  You can choose a special theme, like “Great wines of France”, for instance.  If you just came back from a trip to Italy, “Vineyards of Tuscany” would make a perfect topic.  Naturally, you do not have to travel to create the right atmosphere for the party.  A trip to your local wine merchant with guidance from a connoisseur could also set the stage for a brilliant party.Antique Wine Accessories at Inessa Stewart's Antiques & Interiors

Building Heritage with Architectural Antiques

man’s home is his castle… reads an oft-quoted American Proverb.  What a better way to achieve that end than the act of incorporating timeless and unique architectural antiques from European châteaux, castles and stately manoirs as we design, build or remodel our homes?

For centuries many lavish manoirs were conceived as timeless by incorporating architectural antiques into the building process.  If you have been fortunate enough to spend time in these historic gems ~ such as the Biltmore Castle and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston ~ you will emerge impressed by such amazing structures.   As I visited these and many other historic homes I always came away with a lingering, edifying memory of the experience.   What reverence these builders had for architectural antiques even a century ago!  Even then they realized the importance of incorporating antiques into what was at the time “modern” architecture.

We all know antique furniture brings an instant charm and style to a room, and in the same way architectural antiques evoke instant grandeur, romance or quaintness ~ depending on which style you choose.  If you choose an Italian Renaissance fireplace surround, you can easily build upon it using Italian Renaissance antiques throughout the room to reflect that grand and timeless period.  If it’s romance you crave, choosing a Regence Cararra marble mantel will bring the impressive elegance and romance of the Bourbon Kings that are most famous for its intrinsic French antique style.

Architectural antiques make it easy to create one-of-a-kind designs even in a modern interior, and they are the secret ingredient of many top interior designers and architects.  We have been privileged to work this many of them, and have been honored to supply amazing antiques and relics for many modern-day chateaux and manoirs.

Antique Italian Renaissance garden in full bloom

Being born and raised in one of the great cities of Europe, I was used to being surrounded by amazing gems of architecture.  Gorgeous buildings, museums and villas surrounded by meticulously manicured gardens are the norm, so I became accustomed to this environment that charmed and inspired me in my youth.  Reflections of my childhood have continued to influence me throughout my life, so as we started our antique business, architectural antiques became a large part of it.  Most people do not realize that the châteaux that appears at the top of our website’s homepage is our actual headquarters and flagship showroom in Baton Rouge.  It is a modern structure in every way but appearance ~ totally achieved with the incorporation of a decades-old collection of architectural antiques.  We are about to embark on our next project soon, a second building on the same property.  In coming months we will keep you informed on our project with exciting building updates.

A monumental pair of antique French doors found in northern France will be used to grace the main entrance to our second building on our property at our headquarters in Baton Rouge

A famous Roman orator and philosopher who helped introduce Rome to the even more ancient art, architecture and philosophy of Greece, wrote in the first century B.C. ~ “History is the witness that testifies to the passing of time, it illuminates reality, vitalizes memory, provides guidance in daily life, and brings tidings of antiquity”.

May we take this to heart, and use the best of our past to enrich and illuminate our future!
