Meticulously hand-crafted from solid planks of chataignier, then carved in the definitive style of the Rennes region during the days surrounding the American Revolution on the other side of the Atlantic, this antique Country French piece stands as a testament to artisanry that literally defies time itself! Stylized floral and foliate motifs are depicted on elaborately contoured and chamfered panels, with mitered cornerposts accented with tassel motifs in bas relief. Cast brass keyguards and brass hinges have also weathered the centuries, and are still fully functional! Designed to store all a family's china, flatware and glassware, such pieces were considered the focal anchor of the room, and today are still revered for their eye-catching combination of style and the natural beauty of the wood!
Circa 1750s.
