Back in the days before hot and cold running water, folks made do with simple contrivances such as this fontaine, which held a gallon or so of water in a reservoir above a basin. Such items were placed just outside the back door so that family and field hands could wash up before coming inside, hopefully to sit down at the table for a wonderful provincial feast. Hand-crafted from copper with brass spigots, this example features dovetailed joints, and was mounted on a solid red oak wall plaque.
