Crafted during the Napoleon III period, this antique Directoire Style Country French walnut armoire was built by talented rural artisans emulating the styles prevalent in the courts of Paris. The Directoire style is admired for its simplicity of architecture and classic look that blends with a wide variety of decors. In this particular keepsake, sumptuous French walnut was employed and joined by pegged mortise & tenon joinery, all completely done by hand. THe hand-forged lockwork mechanism and hinges are also original to the piece. A very subtle transitional feature is evident in the subtly scrolled apron below with scrolled legs, in deference to the style that was soon to enrapture the French court and become the fashionable look for decades thereafter.
