Combining the talents of four master artisans, the French bombe commode remains a perennial favorite! First, the cabinemaker creates the undulating form of the casework, upon which the specialist applies veneering and marquetry from a variety of indigenous and imported woods. In this example, a floral bouquet appears on all three facades. Next the metalsmith applies bronze mounts cast and formed to fit the particular contours of the work. In this case, the bronze on the cornerposts is very unusual. Finally the stonemason contours and bevels a gorgeous piece of marble to top it all off!
Circa 1890s.
