In the months before the French Revolution, the court of Louis XVI reached a pinnacle of classicism expressed in the architecture, interior design, and furnishings of the era. This antique period French commode example was produced while the king was still reigned, and features a contoured and beveled marble top which was just coming into vogue. Exotic mahogany, burl and inlay woods adorn the façade in a remarkable expression of the talents of the artisans who created it, adorned by the original cast bronze pulls and key guards which are works of the jeweler's art unto themselves.
Circa 1760s.
