During the reign of Louis Philippe, French style achieved an unprecedented austerity that to this day remains an icon amongst design. This example is typical of the genre, featuring a tailored architecture that is simplicity itself, with a little flair in the crown that doubles as the uppermost drawer tier. Keyguards protect the wood surrounding the keyhole, and are the only external embellishment. Rather, the artisans who created this piece relied on the sheer natural beauty of the wood, carefully "bookmatching" the grain patterns to create a visual feast for the eyes on the entire facade including the top.
