During the Belle Epoch the Moreau family, consisting of several exceptionally talented sculptors, were revered for their classical expressions drawing from whimsical and mythological themes. Their bronze works were duplicated in limited editions using spelter and proprietary patinaed finishes that enhanced their beauty and increased their popularity. This example, aptly entitled "Sous les Roseaux" or providing the theme for a beautiful mantel clock, depicts a lovely maiden being serenaded by cherubs and is fitted with a clock from Bassigny boasting a hand-painted porcelain dial face. The statuary is mounted on a finely contoured and beveled marble base supported by cast feet. Note the three-dimensionality of the work, viewable from any angle, as such examples were typically placed on the mantel in front of a mirror whereupon all could appreciate the work from any viewing vantage. Remarkably well-preserved, it has been restored to full working order and is ready to beautify any room in your home or office!
Circa 1900.
Measures 24 x 15 x 9.5.
