Survived as a pair for well over a century, this example of the metalsmith's art is representative of the skill and dedication required to ply one's trade during the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century. Cast from solid bronze using the lost wax method, each has been hand-chased for additional detail, rendering surprisingly lifelike lions with anthropomorphic attributes. The weight of the bronze also easily lends itself to upholding even the heaviest of books.
