Perhaps to show off one's wealth, or perhaps to show one's appreciation for exceptional artisanry, chairs such as this pair were hand-sculpted from solid walnut during the late 19th century in Italy as was fashionable in Northern Italy at that time. This pair features an intriguing combination of men's visages above, laurel wreaths below, and fanciful framework to provide a feast for the eyes. The seat is intricately carved on the edge and concentrically grooved and appears to be a single plank of wood.
