Cast from solid bronze and hand-chased for extra detail, this pair of antique French altar candlesticks feature the fleur de lys design in several iterations. Candlelight was the only source of light in churches prior to the end of the 19th century, and beautiful candlesticks such as this pair provided much-needed illumination and ambiance. Only rarely do we find such a high level of quality as evidenced by this pair, lavished with artistic detail not found on typical examples. The amazing relief and exacting artistry is enhanced by the sheer amount of heavy bronze, considered the ideal metal for such uses due to its beauty, durability and ablity to last through the ages.
