Renaissance smoker's chair was considered a prized possession by an affluent family, who first of all could afford such an intricately carved and beautifully upholstered piece of furniture devoted exclusively to the enjoyment of tobacco, and second of all could afford the expensive tobacco which at the time was imported from the Americas. This example shows the particular skill of the artisans in the sculpted seatback and barley twist legs.
