Designed to be a work of art that would immediately become the focal point of any room, this stunning armoire is in a truly remarkable state of preservation! Hand-sculpted by Dutch masters, it features the singular style that was common during the 16th through early 19th centuries in Northern Europe, with exceptionally bold molding starting with the crown which extends a generous overhang all around and is adorned with fluting and egg & dart motifs. Three corinthian capital corbels appear about fluted pilasters that serve as cornerposts and a center stile, which provide a framework for the stunning artistry carved in glorious full relief on each door, framed with a boldy recessed alternate rendition of the egg & dart motif. Angels hovering over stylized foliates with berry-like fruit are the central theme. The multiple tiers of the base molding are further enhanced by amazing crouched lions serving as the feet. There is a cleverly concealed drawer below the doors that highlights the superlative craftsmanship of this bygone era. The center stile is attached to the left door so that both doors yawn open wide making this a good candidate for an entertainment center or bar.
Circa 1780s.
