Frans van Genesen was a well regarded painter, active in the late 19th century and early 20th century, best known for his landscapes and detailed cityscapes. He received fundamental art training at the Royal Academy of Art at Hugue, then at Amsterdam. He also spent some time around 1911 at the Academy of Art in Paris. His works have been featured at Christies, and have been mentioned in the Netherlands Institute of Art History (RKD), one of the most important historical art information centers in the world. His work was also mentioned in the signature book, Two Centuries of Artists in Belgium, Signature of Belgium.
Van Genesen's daughter, Mia, was born in 1914 and also became a significant artist in her own right.
As an iconic Flemish painter, van Genesen has depicted the historic medieval city of Brugges. The city is known for its beautiful canals, earning the name "Venice of the North". Notice the remarkable perspective and captivating grasp of color rendered in this painting. The painting is in an excellent state of preservation, and is signed in the lower right corner.
