In a wonderful display of the indomitable French spirit, what you see before you is a pair of matching solid brass jardinieres fitted with cast bronze handles and feet exhibiting remarkably lifelike details. The brass was recovered from World War I German artillery shells that were strewn about the countryside in relative abundance. In America we sometimes refer to such activity as "making a silk purse out of a sow's ear". I guess in France they have a different saying...
