19th Century French Renaissance Barrel Chair with Angels is a remarkable work of the furniture crafter's art!  Using staves and timbers of old-growth oak, a barrel shape was formed to wraparound the seat, then fitted with bold molding along the top edge, and finally carved to perfection from the scrolled armrests all around the back side with elegant foliate and scrollwork in bas relief.  The tripod base, however, steals the show with elegantly scrolled legs carved with beautiful angels with fully set-back wings creating a corbel effect, with crossed wings under the angels' faces following the contours of the scrollwork.  Just below, the three legs are connected with bowed stretchers lavished with rosettes and more foliate carvings, and underneath that the feet are formed with acanthus leaf-encrusted escargot scrolls.  Surprisingly, the chair is very comfortable for occasional use.  This piece is truly a work of art that deserves placement in the center of the room for all to admire!
